COLUMBUS, Ohio - No.
13/15 Ohio State broke the game open by scoring 18 consecutive points en route
to defeating the Canisius College women's basketball team 84-41 at Value City
Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins fall to 3-5 on the season.
Sophomore
Jen Morabito led Canisius with 12
points, going 4-for-6 from behind the arc. Sophomores Jen Lennox and Jamie Ruttle
each had eight points and five rebounds. Freshman Kayla Hoohuli had six points and six rebounds.
"When
Ohio State picked us up full court, we really struggled to run offense. That's something we know we need to improve on," Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. "They killed our zone
early because Ohio State has such good passers and being taller they picked us
apart.
"We
competed hard at times but we're struggling to compete hard and think and be
smart at the same time. We aren't at the point where this team can do that for
40 minutes."
Canisius
took a quick 3-0 lead on a 3-pointer from Morabito in the opening minute of the
contest. Ohio State then took advantage of seven Canisius turnovers with 18
straight points, 14 coming in the paint, to build a 15-point lead. The Griffs
would hold Ohio State to one basket during a four-minute stretch and made it a
25-13 game after a fast-break layup from junior Ashley Wilkes. Canisius got as close as 30-19 after a 3-pointer
from the corner from junior Allison
Braun. Canisius then held Ohio State scoreless on the next four posessions, but the Griffs couldn't take advantage and committed three straight turnovers. The Buckeyes then went on an 8-0 run during the final 2:19 of the half to take a 38-19 lead into the locker room.
Canisius
made three 3-pointers in the opening three minutes of the second half, but Ohio
State made its first five shots of the second half to push the lead to 24
points after a 3-pointer from Tayler Hill. The Buckeyes would make their first six shots, and nine of their first 12, in the second half en
route to scoring 46 points in the second 20 minutes.
Ohio
State (8-0) was led by Samantha Prahlis who had 20 points, six rebounds and six
assists while Hill had 21 points and four steals.
Canisius
will take the week off from game competition for final exams and conclude its
three-game road stretch on Sunday, Dec. 18, at Kent State. Tipoff is set for 2
p.m.
