QUICK HITTERS

  • The Canisius College women's basketball team concludes its two-game trip to the Mid-Atlantic region with Monday's game at Maryland Eastern Shore.
  • Canisius and UMES are playing for the fourth time in the last six years. The Golden Griffins have won each of the previous three meetings.
  • Canisius defeated UMES 58-48 last season in the Koessler Athletic Center.
  • Canisius has started the season 0-2 for the third consecutive season.
  • In the only meeting between the teams in Princess Anne, Md., Canisius defeated UMES 70-60 on Dec. 29, 2007. The Golden Griffins rallied from a 40-26 halftime deficit, the largest halftime deficit overcome in the program's Division I history.
  • Canisius sophomore Jen Morabito has scored 12 points in each of the first two games — the only Golden Griffin to score double digits in each game this season.
  • The 30 3-point field goal attempts by the Golden Griffins in Saturday's 64-50 loss at Towson were the most by the Griffs since they attempted 30 against Niagara on Feb. 28, 2009.
  • Starting in 2012, the MAAC Championship will be held at the neutral-site MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. for three years.
  • Terry Zeh is in his eighth year as head coach of the Golden Griffins. Zeh has a 115-103 record in his career, leading Canisius to the 2005 MAAC Championship, including the program's first appearance NCAA Tournament, and to the 2009 WNIT.
  • Junior Allison Braun will serve as the team's captain for the 2011-12 season.
  • The 2011-12 Golden Griffin roster features zero seniors for the first time since the 2004-05 team. Every other roster in the MAAC features at least two seniors.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFS

  • Sophomore Jamie Ruttle, the 2011 MAAC Rookie of the Year and team's leading returning scorer (8.9), has scored eight or more points in 18 of the last 23 games.
  • Sophomore Jen Morabito, a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection, ranks second in the MAAC in 3-point field goals made per game (3.5). Morabito is the only Golden Griffin to score in double figures in each game this season. 
  • Junior Allison Braun, the team's captain for the 2011-12 season, is leading the team in rebounding (4.5) through two games. Braun had a career-high four assists in the season opener against St. Bonaventure, all coming in the opening eight minutes of the game.
  • Junior Ashley Durham has 10 assists in the opening two games — tying for the most assists in back-to-back games in her Golden Griffin career. Her six assists against St. Bonaventure were the highest for the junior since she had six against Loyola on Jan. 30.
  • Junior Melissa Gardner has started the last four games (two MAAC Championship games and opening two games this season) and had a career-high three assists against Towson on Saturday.
  • Sophomore Jen Lennox has scored six or more points in nine of the last 12 games. The 6-foot-3 forward has a block in 19 career games.
  • Sophomore Courtney VandeBovenkamp had five or more rebounds in 15 games as a freshman and shot 45.7 percent in the last seven games of the 2010-11 season.
  • Junior Ashley Wilkes had 13 points and seven rebounds to go along with three blocks in 24 minutes off the bench in the opener — the most points by a Golden Griffin in her debut since Marie Warner had 22 points against Buffalo on Nov. 14, 2008
  • Freshman Kayla Hoohuli is averaging 24 minutes off the bench for the Griffs while fellow freshman Brooke Angelos is averaging 8.5 minutes.

UMES SCOUT

  • UMES enters Monday's game with an 0-2 record. The Hawks lost 63-44 to Mount St. Mary's in their opener and then lost 61-53 to James Madison.
  • The Hawks went 12-19 last season and were 8-8 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
  • UMES returned six letterwinners from the 2010-11 team.
  • Chelsea Sanders leads the team with a 13.5 points per game average, having scored in double figures in each game.
  • Shanyce Stewart leads the team with a 8.0 rebounds per game average, recording 11 rebounds against Mount St. Mary's.
  • Eight UMES players are averaging double-digit minutes.
  • UMES is shooting 32.1 percent from the field, has a -9.0 rebounding margin, a +5.0 turnover margin and is 5-for-21 from behind the arc in the opening two games.
  • Fred Batchelor is in his eighth season at UMES and has an 95-113 career record. Batchelor has been a men's basketball assistant at the University at Buffalo, interim men's basketball coach at Buffalo State and head women's basketball coach  at Buffalo State where he went NCAA Tournament in 2001-02.

SERIES HISTORY VS. UMES

  • Canisius has won all three meetings against Maryland Eastern Shore, including each of the last two by 10 points.
  • In the teams' other meeting in Princess Anne, Md. (Dec. 29, 2007), the Griffs rallied from a 40-26 halftime deficit to win 70-60. That was the biggest halftime deficit overcome by the Golden Griffins to win a game at the Division I level.
  • Last season, Jen Morabito led Canisius with 18 points in the 58-48 win over the Hawks. Jamie Ruttle had 12 points and six rebounds in 23 minutes while Melissa Gardner pulled down six rebounds.
  • Tied at 21-21 at the half, Canisius held UMES to three field goals during the opening 14 minutes of the second half and used a 13-3 run to build a lead en route to the 10-point win.
