Women's Basketball Loses At Towson

The Canisius College women's basketball team lost 64-50 at Towson University on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins drop their road opener to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Sophomore Jen Morabito led Canisius with 12 points in the game while junior Ashley Durham had nine points and four assists. Sophomore Jamie Ruttle had eight points and five rebounds.

Towson held Canisius to two points in the opening 10 minutes of the game to build an early 16-2 lead. The Golden Griffins cut the Tigers' lead to nine points on two occasions in the first half, but could never get any closer as they trailed 31-14 at halftime.

Canisius trimmed the Towson lead to 42-32 after a 3-pointer from Durham with just over 10 minutes left in the half. However, the Tigers scored the next two baskets and would put the game away a little later by scoring six of eight points to extend their lead to 54-38.

Nyree Williams led Towson (2-1) with a double-double, totaling 13 points and 15 rebounds, recording game highs in both categories. Sheree Ledbetter had 13 points while Meredith Kennedy had 12 points for the Tigers.

Canisius shot 28.8 percent from the field for the game, including 6-for-28 from behind the arc. Towson overcame 24 turnovers by out-rebounding Canisius 48-30, which included 18 offensive rebounds for the Tigers.

Canisius wraps up its trip to the mid-Atlantic on Monday, when the Golden Griffins play at Maryland Eastern Shore. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.

Notes:

Canisius and Towson met for the second time in series history and for the first time in Baltimore... Morabito has scored in double figures in both games this season and 10 times in her career... Canisius loses its road opener for the sixth consecutive season... The 28 3-point attempts for Canisius were the most by the Golden Griffins since they had 31 against Niagara on Feb. 28, 2009.
