 QUICK HITTERS

  • The Canisius College women's basketball team plays its first road game of the 2011-12 season, playing at Towson on Saturday.
  • Canisius and Towson are playing for just the second time in program history and for the first time in the state of Maryland.
  • Canisius defeated Towson 58-52 in the first meeting between the teams, which came on Nov. 27, 2010, in the Koessler Athletic Center.
  • Canisius sophomore Jamie Ruttle was named to the preseason All-MAAC Second Team at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Confernece Preseason awards banquet on Oct. 25, at the National Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum in Springfield, Mass.
  • Ruttle led the team with 17 points in the season opener, the third-highest point total of her career.
  • Junior Ashley Wilkes had 13 points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench against St. Bonaventure, the most points by a newcomer in her Canisius debut since Marie Warner had 22 against Buffalo on Nov. 14, 2008.
  • Starting in 2012, the MAAC Championship will be held at the neutral-site MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. for three years.
  • Terry Zeh is in his eighth year as head coach of the Golden Griffins. Zeh has a 115-102 record in his career, leading Canisius to the 2005 MAAC Championship, including the program's first appearance NCAA Tournament, and to the 2009 WNIT.
  • Junior Allison Braun will serve as the team's captain for the 2011-12 season.
  • The 2011-12 Golden Griffin roster features zero seniors for the first time since the 2004-05 team. Every other roster in the MAAC features at least two seniors.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFS

  • Sophomore Jamie Ruttle, the 2011 MAAC Rookie of the Year and team's leading returning scorer (8.9),  and has scored eight or more points in 17 of the last 22 games.
  • Sophomore Jen Morabito, a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection, made all four of her 3-point field goal attempts on Monday night. Morabito ranked fifth in the MAAC in 3-point field goal percentage (35.4) last season and fourth in 3-point field goals made per game (1.7).
  • Junior Allison Braun, the team's captain for the 2011-12 season, has appeared in 60 games in her career, making 24 career starts. Braun had a career-high four assists on Monday, all coming in the opening eight minutes of the game.
  • Junior Ashley Durham ranked third on the team in scoring (8.7) last season. She ranked 10th in the MAAC in assists per game (2.5) and free-throw percentage (72.2). Her six assists on Monday, were the highest for the junior since she had six against Loyola on Jan. 30.
  • Junior Melissa Gardner recorded a career-high 11 rebounds in a career-high 36 minutes in the MAAC quarterfinals. She averaged 10.0 rebounds per 40 minutes as a sophomore.
  • Sophomore Jen Lennox set the program's Division I blocks record for freshmen with 28 blocks last season. She ranked 10th in the MAAC in blocks per game. Lennox has scored six or more points in eight of the last 11 games.
  • Sophomore Courtney VandeBovenkamp had five or more rebounds in 15 games as a freshman and shot 45.7 percent in the last seven games of the 2010-11 season.
  • Junior Ashley Wilkes had 13 points and seven rebounds to go along with three blocks in 24 minutes off the bench in the opener.
  • Freshman Kayla Hoohuli played 23 minutes for the Griffs on Monday while fellow freshman Brooke Angelos played nine minutes.

TOWSON SCOUT

  • Towson enters Saturday's game with a 1-1 record. The Tigers defeated Western Kentucky 67-62 in the season opener and lost 82-46 to Maryland on Wednesday.
  • The Tigers went 9-21 last season and 3-15 in the Colonial Athletic Association. 
  • Towson returned three starters and three other letterwinners while welcoming eight newcomers to this year's team.
  • Tanisha McTiller leads the team in the early part of the season with a 12.0 points per game average.
  • Nyree Williams is averaging 9.5 points per game and 10 rebounds per game.
  • The Tigers have been outrebounded by 19.5 rebounds per game in the first two contests.
  • Towson has shot 5-for-10 from behind the arc this season, with Meredith Kennedy going 5-for-6 in the opening two games.
  • Nine Tigers have appeared in both games, with eight of them averaging at least 15 minutes per game and six averaging at least 23 minutes.
  • Joe Matthews is in his 11th season at Towson and has a career record of 120-176. Matthews led the Tigers to a 22-10 record in 2007-08.

LAST TIME OUT VS. TOWSON

  • Canisius held Towson to four field goals during the final 11-and-a-half minutes en route to a 58-52 win over the Tigers.
  • Ashley Durham scored a career-high 22 points, including 11-for-15 shooting from the free-throw line. Jamie Ruttle had 11 points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench. 
  • Towson used a 12-1 run to go up 38-31 in the second half, but Canisius scored nine straight points, including two 3-pointers from Micayla Drysdale, to take a 42-41 lead. 
  • Canisius extended its run to 20-7, holding Towson without a field goal for nearly seven minutes. The Griffs made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch.
