Sophomore Brooke Bandazian broke onto the score sheet
for the Blue and Gold but it wasn't enough as the Canisius College women's soccer team lost 3-1 to Cleveland
State at Krenzel Field in Cleveland on Sunday.
The Griffs
outshot the team from Ohio 9-2 in the first half but it was Cleveland State
that was able to find the back of the net first. Allie Riczo put the Vikings on
the board in the 21st minute with a header off a corner kick with the
assist going to Carla Ragone. Canisius would control play throughout the half
but the score would remain 1-0 heading into halftime. Riczo would strike again
in the second half, scoring off a one-time shot from a corner kick in the 52nd
minute to make it 2-0. Bandazian would respond fifteen minutes later blasting a
loose ball past the Cleveland State goalkeeper to cut the deficit to one.
Natalie Daniels however would cap the scoring for Vikings in the 76th
minute to close out the victory.
"We had
trouble defending corner kicks today," said Canisius College head coach Jim Wendling. "I was real happy with
our passing game but once again we couldn't finish. We've been giving up early
goals which forces us to play from behind; bottom line we have to play better
soccer."
Once again
Canisius goalkeepers Lesley Ivinac and
junior Caroline Robert split time in
net today for the Blue and Gold. Ivinac started the match playing 59 minutes
and made one save allowing one goal while Robert played 30 minutes and made two
saves while allowing two goals. Senior Laura
Ellis led the team in shots with five with Bandazian not far behind with 3.
The Griffs outshot Cleveland State 13-10 but were unable to cash in on the
opportunities.
The Blue
and Gold will head home and prepare for a home contest on Sept. 10, when Griffs
play host to Wright State at 7 p.m.
