Senior captain Laura Ellis scored a goal with 37 seconds left in the second overtime period to beat the Colgate Raiders at the Demske Sports Complex Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins improve to 6-4-0 on the season before they begin conference play next weekend.
The Griffs and Raiders played a tightly contested affair that saw only three shots on goal combined through the first half. Canisius would draw first blood in the second half as junior Kelly Reinwald recorded her seventh goal of the year taking advantage of a pass from senior Kasey Makowski in 60th minute. Reinwald made history this afternoon, as this was her sixth-straight contest recording a point, which is the longest streak of her career. However the Raiders would answer back in the 69th minute of play when Christy Patterson lofted a shot over the head of senior goalkeeper Lesley Ivinac to tie the game 1-1. The score would stay that way through the rest of the half and through the first overtime. It appeared that the game would end in a tie however Makowski was able to get free along the wing to feed a pass out in front of the box for Ellis as she netted the game-winning tally.
"That's actually a play we work on in practice," Canisius head coach Jim Wendling said. "We've been really successful using it as we scored with it on Friday, so we're obviously very happy about the result."
Canisius was able to withstand a second half offensive assault by the Raiders as they outshot the Griffs 16-12 in the second frame. Senior goalkeeper Lesley Ivinac earned her fifth win of the year as she got the start in net making eight saves in the contest, allowing one goal. The Griffs remain undefeated at home going a perfect 4-0-0 in 2010 .
The Griffs will begin the MAAC portion of their 2010 schedule when they head to Baltimore, Md., to take on the defending MAAC champion Loyola Oct. 1. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
