The Canisius College Women's Soccer team received goals from freshman Brianna Smith, senior Kasey Makowski, and junior Kelly Reinwald to defeat the University at Buffalo by a final score of 3-0 at the McGraw-Jennings Field, in Olean, N.Y. Sunday afternoon.
The Bulls and Golden Griffins would play a scoreless first half as the Griffs were outshot 12-7; however the second frame proved to be another story. Smith would break the scoreless tie as she netted her team-leading fifth goal of the year receiving a pass from Reinwald in the 52nd minute. The Blue and Gold would make it 2-0 fifteen mintues later as Makowski would notch her first tally of the year taking advantage of a pass from junior Jenny Griffin. Reinwald capped the Canisius scoring in the 76th minute when she received a pass from Griffin and blasted it past Courtney McHale as the Griffs would go on to win their fourth game of the season.
"I thought this was our most complete game of the year," Canisius College head coach Jim Wendling said. "We have struggled putting together a 90-minute game this season and tonight shows that when we can be consistent, the results will be there for us."
St. Bonaventure earned first-place in the Puma Tournament with a perfect 2-0-0 record. The Griffs took second place (1-1-0) with Niagara placing third (1-1-0) and the University at Buffalo taking fourth (0-2-0). "Obviously we're very proud of our players today," Wendling said. "I thought Jenny and Kelly played outstanding and Laura was a tremendous on the back end for us."
The Griffs received offensive support from the usual suspects this afternoon as Reinwald and Smith both recorded goals. Reinwald and number one and two on the team scoring leader board as Reinwald has 11 points and Smith 10 points this season.
