Women's Soccer Drops the First Game in the Puma Tournament

Senior goalkeeper Lesley Ivinac made a career high 10 saves and freshman Brianna Smith tallied her fourth goal of the season as Canisius College women's soccer fell to St. Bonaventure 2-1 in the team's opening match at the Puma Tournament, in Olean, N.Y. Friday night.

The Bonnies drew first blood in the match when Emily Buccilla received a pass from Hannah Lapp and netted her first goal in 2010. Canisius would head into halftime down 1-0 after being outshot by St. Bonaventure 12-1. Chelsea Smetzer would extend the Bonnies lead to 2-0 in the 70th minute of play as she blasted a pass from Janelle Taylor past the inside post. The Golden Griffins would attempt a rally in the 81st minute when junior Kelly Reinwald lofted a pass over to Smith who headed the ball past goalkeeper Nicole Markert however it wasn't enough as St. Bonaventure would prevail 2-1.

"We're struggling with inconsistency right now," Canisius head coach Jim Wendling said. "This team has a lot of potential but we need to learn how to play a 90 minute game."

The Griffs couldn't take advantage of an outstanding goalkeeping performance by Ivinac, as she turned away 10 of 12 shots on the game. Canisius had a tough time mustering offense as the team was outshot 26-5 throughout the game.

The Blue and Gold will square off with Buffalo for the second and final match of the Puma Tournament, which is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in Olean, N.Y.

Game Notes: Friday's match is the third consecutive contest where Reinwald and Smith have teamed up to net a tally... Ivinac doubled her season high total for saves per game stopping 10 shots during the contest... The Griffs have allowed their opponent to score the first goal of the game in five of the seven games they have played this year.
