Freshman Brianna Smith earned MAAC Rookie of the
Week honors after scoring three goals over the weekend for the Canisius College women's soccer team.
Smith
was an offensive leader for the Golden Griffins as she
accounted for three of the team's six goals in two non-league wins. The freshman forward netted two
tallies against Wright State on Friday when the Griffs defeated the Raiders 4-3
in double-overtime. Smith followed up that performance by netting a
game-winning score on Sunday against Youngstown State.
Smith
is currently second on the team in points (six) with three goals, and is only
one point back of team leader Kelly Reinwald. Smith's offensive production has
the Blue and Gold ranked third in the MAAC in points, goals scored and goals
averaged per game. Smith is tied for third in the MAAC in goals scored (three)
and sixth in points (six).
The
Griffs return to action this weekend when they compete in the Puma Tournament
in Olean, N.Y. The team will battle with long-time rival St. Bonaventure Friday at 5 p.m. before meeting cross-town rival Buffalo Sunday at 12 p.m.
