Women's Soccer Defeats Wright State In Overtime

Junior Kelly Reinwald scored two goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime, to lift the Canisius College women's soccer team to a 4-3 double-OT victory at the Demske Sports Complex on Friday night. The Golden Griffins had a pair of players score two goals in the game as Reinwald was joined by freshman Brianna Smith who scored the first goals of her collegiate career.

Canisius opened up the scoring in the sixth minute of play when Reinwald took advantage of a penalty kick as she netted her first goal of the season. The Raiders answered right back as Amber Kasmer fired a shot past senior goalkeeper Lesley Ivinac to tie the game at 1-1. The game would stay that way until the 60th minute when Smith blasted her first goal of the night with the assist coming from senior Kasey Makowski. Smith would extend the Griffs lead to two as she took advantage of a Reinwald pass in the 65th minute of play, however the Raiders would not go quietly. Cassie Gross would cut the lead to one in the 74th minute and Brittany Persaud would knot the game up at 3-3 with 45 seconds left on the clock in the second half. The Blue and Gold broke through with the game winning goal when Reinwald fired a loose ball into the net in the 108th minute to seal the game for the Griffs.

"Offensivly we played better today with our chemistry and our passing," said Reinwald. "We're starting to learn the strengths of our team and it's showing. This is a nice way to head into the game at Youngstown on Sunday."

Ivinac got he start in net for the Blue and Gold and recorded six saves for her second win of the season. Jenny Griffin led the team in shots with five and Reinwald ended the game with five points (two goals and one assist).

The Griffs will travel to Youngstown, Ohio on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against Youngstown State.

Game Notes: With the win Canisius defeated Wright State for the first time in program history and pushes its all-time series record to 1-1-0 in series... The Griffs continue excell in overtime games, pushing their record to 5-0-5 in the last 10 matches that required extra time.
