Buffalo Edges Men's Soccer, 1-0

The Canisius College men's soccer team lost a close battle with local rival Buffalo on Friday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. The loss drops the Griffs to 0-3-0 early in the season, while the Bulls earn their first victory and are now 1-2-0 in 2010.

"We definitely played a pretty good game," said Canisius head coach Jim Hesch. "We worked hard. We had a lot of possession and some chances. At the end of the day, they put one of theirs away and we didn't. We just need to stay positive, keep improving each and every day - which we have since day one - and move forward."

Buffalo scored the lone goal of the game in the 20th minute of play. After Canisius was whistled for a penalty, Ian Storan connected from outside the box on a direct kick to give the Bulls the early advantage, 1-0.

The Canisius defense, however, would clamp down behind the play of goalkeeper Kareem Gray. The sophomore stepped up and stopped a number of point-blank shots, including one on a breakaway to keep the Griffs in the contest. Gray stopped a total of five shots in the game.

On the opposite end, the Griffs had a number of near misses. Sophomore Casper Rej-Kleczek had his shot trickle just wide in the 40th minute, while classmate Regan Steele couldn't connect on a great opportunity in the second half of play.

Both squads had 16 shots during the contest, while Canisius held a slight edge in corner kicks, 8-7. Ryan Aubrey recorded four saves to earn the victory for the Bulls.

Canisius returns to action on Sunday, September 19, playing at Cornell.

Game Notes: Buffalo is now 26-8-5 all-time against the Griffs ... Canisius has lost its last eight home openers, including the last four by a goal each, and is now 16-20-3 all-time in its first home game ... Sophomore Charles Crook and freshman Zack Schwartz each made their first collegiate appearance on Friday.
