Canisius Drops Regular Season Finale at Niagara

Zachary Applewhite scored the opening goal of the contest and added an assist on the insurance marker to lift Niagara to a 2-0 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday at Niagara Field in Lewiston, N.Y.

Tommy Mittelstadt accounted for the second tally in the contest for the Purple Eagles (8-6-1, 5-4-1 MAAC), who secured a berth in the 2025 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship with the win. Grant Wyles recorded one save to post his third clean sheet of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Preston Harold started in net for the Golden Griffins (5-10-1, 3-7-0 MAAC), making four saves.
 
Niagara broke the scoreless tie in the 65th minute as Canisius was called for a handball in the box that led to the penalty kick goal from Applewhite to give Niagara the 1-0 lead.
 
Niagara extended its lead late in the 83rd minute as the free kick from Applewhite found the head of Mittelstadt, who headed the ball into the net to propel Niagara to the shutout victory.
 
GAME NOTES
• Wednesday marked the 67th all-time meeting between the two programs. Niagara now leads the series by a 36-26-5 margin against Canisius.
• Niagara held a 14-3 shot advantage in the contest, highlighted by a 9-3 advantage in the second half.
• Canisius and Niagara were both awarded five corners in the contest.
• Five Griffs played the entire 90 minutes – seniors Josh Miller, and Kyle Pollard, freshman Henrique Dias, and Kiryl Dubins, and sophomore Gianni Angaran.
