Canisius College junior Steve McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) was
selected in the 30th round by the Toronto Blue Jays (Pick No. 906)
on the second day of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday. McQuail
is the fifth Golden Griffin to be drafted in the last three years and is the
first Canisius junior to be drafted in that timeframe.
McQuail led Canisius with a .397 batting
average, 89 hits, 21 doubles, 20 home runs, 81 RBI and .768 slugging percentage
during the 2010 season. McQuail set program records with his 89 hits and 81 RBI,
and his 81 RBI also set a MAAC single-season record.
Nationally, McQuail ranked in the top 10
in RBI, top 20 in slugging percentage and total bases and top 30 in runs scored
(70).
Seniors Kevin Mahoney (New York Yankees)
and Kevin Mailloux (Seattle Mariners) were selected in the 2009 MLB Draft while
Benson Merritt (Cincinnati Reds) and current Griff Nathan Linseman (Detroit Tigers) were selected in the 2008 MLB
Draft as high school seniors.
Three groups of players are eligible for the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft:
- High school players, if they have graduated from high school and
have not yet attended college or junior college;
- College players, from four-year colleges who have either
completed their junior or senior years or are at least 21 years old; and
- Junior college players, regardless of how many years of school
they have completed
A Major League Baseball team generally retains the rights to a selected player until 11:59 p.m. (EDT) on Aug. 15, or until the player enters, or returns to, a
four-year college on a full-time basis.
