Canisius College men's basketball
coach Tom Parrotta announced today
that Ashton Khan (Scarborough, Ont.) has
signed a National Letter of Intent
and will join the Golden Griffins' roster for the 2010-11 season.
Khan, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound guard,
spent last season at the Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., where he averaged
10 points, six assists and five rebounds per game while helping lead the
Bobcats to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Class A
championship. He was also a driving force behind Brewster Academy's title run
at the National Prep School Championship, where the Bobcats defeated Albertus
Magnus College 79-76 to overtime to claim the national championship. In
addition to Khan, four other players off last year's Brewster roster signed
NLIs to play Division I basketball, and according to the school's web site,
there were 35 former Brewster players on a Division I roster during the 2009-10
basketball season.
Khan played four years of
basketball at Blessed Mother Teresa in Scarborough, Ont., where he averaged 20
points, five rebounds and five assists in his final season before heading to
Brewster. In his time at BMT, Khan was named an MVP at four different
tournaments, including the 2006 Toronto Hoops Classic and the 2008 Cataract
Classic, which is held annually in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
"Ashton's speed and athleticism
will compliment our offensive and defensive systems immediately," Parrotta
said. "Having played a significant role on one of the best prep school programs
in the country, we fully expect him to contribute from day one."
It was also announced today that
forward Rishawn Johnson (White Plains,
N.Y.) will graduate from Canisius this summer with his undergraduate degree
in digital media arts and will not return for his final season of eligibility
at the College. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound Johnson played in 87 games for the Blue
and Gold where he averaged 2.9 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.
"Rishawn has been a tremendous
member of our program and he will earn his undergraduate degree in three years,"
Parrotta said. "I'm proud of what Rishawn has accomplished in the classroom and
on the basketball court in his time here at Canisius. He dedicated himself from
day one and we wish him nothing but the best in all of his future endeavors."
Khan joins Chris Manhertz (Bronx, N.Y.), who
signed his NLI during the NCAA's early signing period in November on next
year's roster, which will feature four returning starters and eight returning
letterwinners. Canisius will also gain the services of Gaby Belardo (San Juan, Puerto Rico), a transfer from South Florida
who sat out the 2009-10 season in accordance with NCAA regulations. Canisius
went 15-17 overall and 8-10 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play in
2009-10, with the 15 wins standing as the most for the team since the 2000-01
season.
