The Canisius College softball team
posted a sweep of Saint Peter's on the road in Jersey City, N.J., on Sunday,
taking game one by a score of 9-1 in six innings before shutting out the host
Peahens 14-0 in five innings in the nightcap. The wins improve the Golden
Griffins to 22-14 overall and 6-2 in MAAC play, while Saint Peter's dropped to
2-24 overall and 0-8 in conference action.
Canisius freshman Katie Medina went a combined 5-for-5
with two doubles and four runs scored in the wins, while senior teammate Michelle Fridey went a combined 4-for-6
with a double, a triple, four runs scored and four RBIs. Sophomore Lizzy Gatto had four hits and drive in
four runs in the wins for the Griffs, with fellow sophomore Lauren Falzone adding three hits and
three runs scored to the winning effort. As a team, Canisius racked up 26 hits
on the day, with eight of those being doubles.
Sophomore pitcher Caroline Main earned her 10th
win of the season in the circle in the first game after she game up one run on
five hits while striking out six and walking one in six innings of work.
Freshman Amanda Baun was credited
with her league-leading 12th win of the season in the nightcap after
she shut out Saint Peter's on three hits while fanning four and walking two.
In the first game, Canisius led 4-0
after two innings, with three of those runs coming in the top of the first off
losing pitcher Shelby Beavers. Sophomore Katie
Lancellotti put the Blue and Gold on the scoreboard first with an
RBI-double to allowed Fridey to score, and that hit was followed by an RBI-base
hit off the bat of junior Emily Helbig that
knocked in Paige Freiberger and
Lancellotti. In the third, Saint Peter's scored it's only run of the day to
make the score 4-1 in favor of the Griffs, but Canisius ended the game early in
the sixth with a five-run outburst, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat
of junior Lauren Hope.
In the second game, the Griffs
scored a total of 11 runs in the first three innings, highlighted by a five-run
breakout in the top of the first off losing pitcher Nicole Schnecker. In that
first inning, Canisius sent nine batters to the plate and scored first on an
RBI-single to left by Fridey, which allowed Hope to score from third. Fridey
would come around to score along with Medina when Freiberger ripped a triple to
right center, and Freiberger would score two batters later on an RBI-base hit by
Gatto. In the second, Lancellotti hit her second homer in as many days, this
time a grand slam, to put the Blue and Gold up 9-0, and in the third, a Fridey
double to right allowed Medina and Falzone to score.
Freshman Stephanie Pfentner added an RBI-double to the cause in the fourth
and Fridey and Gatto each drove in a run in the fifth to give the Griffs the
14-0 lead. Baun allowed just three hits in the win, all singles, and only one
Saint Peter's base runner reached third base in the second game.
Canisius, which has now won 10 of
its last 11 overall, returns to action Wednesday, April 21, when the team plays
at St. Bonaventure. First pitch in Olean, N.Y., is set for 3 p.m.
