The Canisius College softball team
split a MAAC doubleheader on the road at Manhattan Saturday, dropping the first
game 5-1 before bouncing back to take the second contest 5-2. The Golden
Griffins saw their record move to 20-14 overall and 4-2 in MAAC play, making
this the 23rd 20-win season for the program since 1980. Manhattan
moved to 13-15-1 overall and 1-3 in the twinbill split, with the win in game
one snapping the school's 13-game losing streak to Canisius.
In the second game, Canisius posted
its eighth win in its last nine contests after sophomore pitcher Caroline Main earned her ninth win of
the season in the circle and her fifth-straight victory as a starter. The
Griffs scored first in the game in the top of the third when freshman Katie Medina crossed the plate on a
play where senior Michelle Fridey
reached base via a Manhattan error. Canisius posted two more runs on the
scoreboard in the top half of the fifth on an RBI-single by sophomore Lizzy Gatto and an RBI-base hit by
sophomore Katie Lancellotti. After
the Lady Jaspers scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth, Canisius
tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh when junior Paige Freiberger hit her team-leading ninth homer of the season, a
two-run shot, to put the team up 5-1. Main allowed one run in the home half of
the seventh on a solo home run, but she retired the next two hitters to secure
the victory.
Main gave up two runs on five hits
while striking out five and walking two in the win for Canisius, which has now
taken 14 of the last 15 meetings between Canisius and Manhattan on the softball
diamond. Junior Lauren Hope went
1-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base in the win for the
Blue and Gold, while Freiberger wrapped up the nightcap by going 1-for-4 with a
homer, a run scored and two RBIs. Gatto and Medina also scored runs in the
winning effort.
In the first game, Manhattan starter
Erica Sullivan went the distance and allowed one run on three hits while
striking out four Canisius batters to record the win in the circle for the Lady
Jaspers. Manhattan scored three times in the home half of the first off losing
pitcher Amanda Baun, with Jaci Rahey
putting the Lady Jaspers on the board first with an RBI-double to left center.
Nicole Michel followed Rahey with an RBI-double of her own, and Rahey was able
to score from third base moments later on a sacrifice fly by Melissa Cascio.
Canisius cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the second when Lancellotti hit her
fifth homer of the season with one out in the frame, but that was all the runs
the Griffs would be able to push across the plate as Sullivan retired
13-straight batters before Fridey ripped her team-leading 12th
double of the year to lead off the seventh.
Canisius will return to action
Sunday when the team plays at Saint Peter's in a MAAC doubleheader. The Griffs
and Peahens will start the day in Jersey City, N.J., at 11 a.m.
