The Canisius College softball team extended its season-long
winning streak to seven straight with a sweep of St. Francis (PA) Wednesday in
Loretto, Pa. The Golden Griffins (19-13) took game one by a score of 3-2 before
rolling to a 15-2 victory in five innings. The Red Flash slipped to 9-28 with
the pair of losses.
In the twinbill, Canisius racked up 22 hits, while the
Griffs' pitching duo of freshman Amanda Baun and sophomore Caroline Main held
the Red Flash to four runs on 12 hits. Six different Canisius players had
multiple hits on the day in the victories, with senior Michelle Fridey, junior
Paige Freiberger and junior Emily Helbig all driving in four runs in the two
contests.
In the first game, Canisius took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI
single by Freiberger, which allowed junior Lauren Hope to score from second.
After St. Francis (PA) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the first,
Canisius regained the lead at 2-1 when Fridey knocked in Hope from third on a
fielder's choice. The Red Flash tied the game at 2-2 in the home half of the
third, and the game would remain tied until the top of the seventh when Helbig
drilled a base hit up the middle that allowed Freiberger to score from second
base.
Freiberger reached first by earning a one-out walk and then
moved to second on a base hit by sophomore Katie Lancellotti. In the bottom of
the seventh, Baun earned her MAAC-leading 11th win of the season by
getting out of a jam with a ground ball and a double play.
Baun, the MAAC's reigning Rookie of the Week, needed just 87
pitches to earn the win after she allowed two runs on five hits while striking
out five and walking one. Hope wrapped up the first game by going 4-for-4 with
a double, two runs scored and a stolen base. Freiberger and Lancellotti each
had two hits in the first game as well, with Lancellotti adding her third
double of the year in the win.
In the second game, Canisius wasted little time scoring,
posting five runs in the top of the first, with the key hit coming in the form
of a three-run homer by Freiberger. Sophomore Amanda Cannizzo also knocked in
two runs in the top of the first with a double to left center as the Blue and
Gold sent nine batters to the dish in the frame.
The Griffs added three runs in the second when Helbig drove
in three with a bases-loaded double to the gap in left center. In the third,
Canisius crossed he plate four times, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat
of Fridey with one out. For Fridey, it marks the fifth time in her career she's
posted four RBIs in a game and it is the second time that has happened in the
Griffs' last three outings.
Main picked up the win after she went all five innings and
fanned five while giving up two runs on seven hits. She improves to 8-5 in the
circle with the win. The 15 runs scored are the most for the Griffs this
season.
Canisius will return to action Saturday when the team
travels to meet MAAC rival Manhattan in a conference doubleheader. First pitch
in Riverdale, N.Y., is set for 12 p.m.
Game Notes: This seven-game winning streak is the program's
longest since the 2008 season when the Griffs ripped off 10-straight wins from
April 6-15... Canisius improved to 19-2 all-time against St. Francis (PA)... The 15
runs in the second game are the most for the Griffs since Feb. 18, 2008, when
the team beat Norfolk State 18-0 on the road... Freiberger's home run in game two
makes her just the fourth player in school history to hit eight or more homers
in the same season... Fridey's five RBIs in the doubleheader gives her 92 for her
career, making her just the 11th player in school history to reach
the 90-career RBI milestone... Hope now has 20 stolen bases this year and 81 in
her career.
