Defense Keys Fairfield?s Victory Over Canisius Women's Lacrosse

The Canisius College women's lacrosse team was held off the scoreboard for the first 24:41 of the second half as Fairfield pulled away for a 13-7 victory on Friday night. The Griffs are now 5-7 on the season and 0-1 in MAAC play, while Fairfield improves to 7-4 and 1-0 against conference foes.

"In the first half, we played right with them," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "During the second half, we didn't take advantage of great opportunities and we are searching for answers right now."

Senior Brett Poissant and sophomore Megan Oosting led the Griffs with two goals, while juniors Taylor Gray and Carly Quinn each recorded two points on a goal and an assist. Junior Ashley Curtis rounded out the scoring for Canisius with a goal.

Oosting and sophomore Theresa Walton (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Griffs with three caused turnovers to anchor the Canisius defense. Walton was also able to hold Fairfield's leading scorer, Kristen Coleman, without a goal for the first time in her career. Coleman had netted a score in 49-straight games, the third-longest streak in the country.

Fairfield raced out to the early advantage, scoring four of the first five scores. After the teams traded a pair of goals to start the game, the Stags scored the next three goals to grab a 4-1 lead 8:36 into the contest. Oosting stopped the Fairfield run but the Stags tallied the next two goals for a 6-2 advantage.

Canisius rallied at the end of the first half, scoring the final three goals of stanza to pull within one. Curtis started the run with a goal off a feed from Quinn with 7:15 left in the first. Quinn then scored off a pass from Gray with 3:07 remaining before Gray scored a goal of her own with 10 seconds left as the teams headed into intermission with Fairfield leading, 6-5.

The Stags defense would clamp down in the second half and scored the first four goals, while holding Canisius scoreless for nearly 25 minutes. Poissant ended the Griffs' drought with a free-position goal but the Stags answered just 13 seconds later to seal the victory.

Chloe Mangan led the Stags with four goals in the victory, while Katie Keenan stopped seven shots in goal. The Griffs were led in net by junior Allison Daley, who recorded eight saves.

Fairfield outshot the Griffs, 36-21, including a 22-11 advantage in the second half. The Stags also had a 13-9 edge in draw controls on the night.

Canisius continues MAAC play on Sunday, hosting Marist. First draw at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 1 p.m.
