Women's Lacrosse Dominates Detroit

The Canisius College women's lacrosse team got back in the win column with a 20-5 victory against Detroit at the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday morning. The Golden Griffins improve to 5-4 on the season.

Junior Carly Quinn had a game-high seven points (three goals, four assists) while junior Taylor Gray had six points (three goals, three assists). Junior Ashley Curtis had four goals while Megan Oosting had three goals.

"From the start, that was a total team effort today and I was pleased with the way we played," Canisius coach Scott Teeter said. "We received contributions from a number of players and we'll look to build on this win."

Canisius scored the first five goals of the game and never looked back. The Griffs got on the board just over two minutes into the game when Oosting scored her eighth goal of the season. Curtis scored her first of the day less than a minute later to make it 2-0.

The Griffs doubled their lead in a span of 17 seconds, getting goals from Jackie Loson and Gray. After Quinn scored to make it 5-0, Detroit got its first goal of the game when Corina Mahorn made it 5-1.

Canisius scored the next four goals, including three in a span of 103 seconds, getting goals from Meghan McGunnigle, Oosting and Curtis. The junior scored her third goal of the first half with 8:24 left to put Canisius up 9-1.

The Titans scored the next two goals to cut the Canisius lead to six goals, but Quinn scored with nine seconds left off Brianne Laffey's second assist of the first half to give Canisius a 10-3 halftime lead.

The Griffs never let Detroit make a second-half run as Canisius scored the first four goals of the second half. Nine different Golden Griffs scored the team's 11 goals in the second half, including the first goal of the season for Marissa Brown.

Freshman Gina Molfetta (1-1) earned her first collegiate win with 10 saves in the game.

Canisius continues its five-game homestand on Saturday, when the Golden Griffins host Lehigh at the Demske Sports Complex. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
