Canisius
College seniors Bob Bevilacqua and Frank Turner were recently named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference's All-Academic Team, the conference office announced. To be eligible
for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must achieve at least a 3.2
(on a 4.0 scale) grade point average and must be at least a sophomore in
academic standing.
This marks
the third-straight year Bevilacqua has been named to the league's all-academic
unit, making him one of two active players in the conference to achieve that
milestone for his career. A former walk-on, he played in 72 career games as a
Golden Griffin, where he averaged 3.1 points per game. In his senior year, the
reserve guard scored a career-high 17 points against Siena at home Feb. 14
after he went 6-for-12 from the field and 5-for-9 from 3-point range. Bevilacqua
earned his undergraduate degree in communications in May 2009 and is currently
working towards his master's degree in communications at the College.
Turner
ended his playing career in Blue and Gold ranked in the top-10 in 12 different
statistical categories. The school's all-time leader in career games played
(125) and minutes played (4,567), his 1,769 career points is fourth best in
Canisius history while his 616 career assists are tops in the program's
history. He is the only player in Canisius history to collect more than 1,700
career points, 600 assists and 500 rebounds, and he leaves the College as the
only player in program history to dish out 100-plus assists in four-straight
seasons. Turner earned his undergraduate degree in communications in three
years and will graduate with his master's degree in sport administration this
May.
The Griffs
went 15-17 overall and 8-10 in MAAC action this season, with the 15 wins
standing as the most for the program since 2000-01. Canisius is one of four teams
in the 10-team MAAC to have multiple players honored to the conference's
all-academic squad for this season.
