The Canisius College women's lacrosse team won its second-straight game, defeating Binghamton on Wednesday afternoon, 13-11. With the win, the Griffs improve to 3-2 on the season.
"I thought we showed good poise down the stretch today," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "We responded well from a bad first 20 minutes to earn this victory. It is nice to see your team get 43 shots off but we need to work on quality and not quantity. I thought their goalie played really well today and did a good job of keeping them in the game. We are slowly moving in the right direction."
Junior Ashley Curtis led the Griffs with five goals on the afternoon, while Carly Quinn added four points on three goals and an assist. Sophomore Megan Oosting netted two goals, while senior Brett Poissant and sophomores Rachel Brand and Theresa Walton rounded out the scoring with a goal each.
Junior Allison Daley stopped eight shots in goal. Senior Marissa Brown posted a game-high three caused turnovers with classmate Alison Rusak collecting a team-best five ground balls in addition to two caused turnovers.
The Griffs started the contest strong, netting the first two goals of the game and keeping the Bearcats off the scoreboard for more than 16 minutes. Poissant opened the scoring off a feed from sophomore Kristy Wilensky 2:27 into the game and Curtis tallied an unassisted goal four minutes later.
Binghamton (0-3) answered back and used a 4-2 run to knot the game. Curtis once again gave the Griffs the advantage, scoring her third goal of the half with 1:34 remaining. However, Binghamton sent the game tied into intermission when Lis Zuern tallied a free-position goal with 38 ticks left in the period.
The teams traded two goals to start the second stanza to keep the game deadlocked. With 15:10 remaining in regulation, Brand scored a free-position goal to give the Griffs the lead for good. Quinn and Curtis then netted goals 45 seconds apart and after Binghamton scored once, Quinn added two more goals to stretch the Canisius lead to a game-high four tallies, 12-8.
Binghamton attempted a rally and scored three goals in a 2:55 span to pull within one, 12-11, with 1:28 remaining in the contest. However, Poissant won the ensuing draw control and the Griffs held position until Oosting sealed the victory with her second goal of the game with two seconds remaining.
The Griffs held a convincing advantage in shots, 43-22, but Binghamton's Lauren Scott stopped 21 shots in goal. Canisius also had a 16-10 edge in draw controls, including a 12-3 advantage during the second half.
Beth Moore led the Bearcats with five goals on the afternoon.
Canisius returns to action on Sunday with a road game at Albany. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
