Softball Falls to DePaul in Final Game of Kickin' Chicken Classic

DePaul scored the first four runs of the game and held Canisius two hits as the Golden Griffins lost 6-2 to the Blue Demons in the final game of the Kickin' Chicken Classic in Conway, S.C. on Sunday afternoon. The loss evens Canisius' record at 7-7 on the season.

After a leadoff walk to Becca Heteniak and a groundout moved Heteniak to second, Simone Ashkar scored Heteniak on an RBI single to put DePaul up 1-0. The Blue Demons then scored three runs on two infield hits in the third. Sean Plese and Alex Morocco sandwiched singles around a walk to Heteniak to load the bases with no outs. All the runners would advance on an illegal pitch, scoring Plese. Two sacrifice flies would score Heteniak and Morocco to make the score 4-0.

The Griffs got both of their hits in the bottom of the third inning as Lauren Hope reached on a two-out, infield single. Lizzy Gatto jumped on a 2-0 pitch and hit her second home run of the season to cut the DePaul lead to 4-2.

Those would be the only hits of the day for Canisius as Heteniak (4-3) faced one batter of the minimum the rest of the game. DePaul added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Freshman Amanda Baun (4-3) took the loss for the Griffs, allowing four runs on three hits in her three innings of work. Sophomore Caroline Main allowed two runs, one earned, in four innings of relief.

Canisius returns to the field at the Colonial Classic in Washington, D.C. next weekend with two games on each day. The Golden Griffins start play against Army on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 9 a.m.
