Canisius College hit three home runs in an eight-run second
inning and didn't look back, as the Golden Griffins posted a 10-1, five-inning
win over host Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Kickin' Chicken
Classic in Conway, S.C. The win came after the Blue and Gold fell to DePaul 8-0
in five innings in the day's first contest. Canisius is now 7-6 on the year.
After freshman pitcher Amanda Baun retired Coastal Carolina
in order in the top of the first, Canisius wasted little time putting two runs
on the board in the bottom of the frame when junior Paige Freiberger drilled a
two-run homer off losing pitcher Katelin Edwards. After the first two Canisius
batters were retired to start the inning, senior Michelle Fridey reached on a
base hit, which was followed by Freiberger's second homer of the season. In the
second inning, the Blue and Gold added to the fun with eight runs on seven hits
while chasing Edwards, who gave up seven runs on seven runs against 11 batters
faced.
Canisius pinch runner Lauryn Chris scored on an RBI-single
by junior Lauren Hope, as the Griffs strung together four base hits to start
the stanza. After Hope's RBI made it 3-0, sophomore Lizzy Gatto cleared the
bases with her first collegiate grand slam to make the score 7-0, and Fridey
followed with a solo homer of her own.
Freiberger walked moments later, setting up sophomore Katie
Lancellotti's two-run homer to make the scoreboard read 10-0.
Baun improved to 4-2 in the circle for the Griffs after she
went the distance and gave up one run on two hits while striking out seven and
walking one.
The win for Canisius came after the Griffs saw their
six-game win streak come to an end with an 8-0 five-inning loss to DePaul
earlier in the day. The Blue Demons racked up eight runs on 10 hits in the win
and ended the game early by scoring six in the fifth, highlighted by
back-to-back homers.
DePaul's Tara Voss put the Blue Demons on the board first
with a two-run shot off losing pitcher Caroline Main in the home half of the
second. The score remained 2-0 in favor of DePaul until the Blue Demons sent 10
batters to the plate in the fifth. After getting the first out, Alex Morrocco
was hit by a pitch, which set up Simone Ashkar's two run bomb to make the score
4-0. Maria Matthews added to the cushion with a solo homer moments later.
For Canisius, Freiberger had two hits in the loss to DePaul,
including her first triple of the season, while junior Emily Helbig also
registered two hits.
The Griffs will play meet
DePaul Sunday at 10 a.m., on the final day of the Kickin' Chicken Classic.
