Softball Wins Two in South Carolina

The Canisius softball team moved to 6-5 on the season with a pair of victories on the first day of the Kickin' Chicken Classic in Conway, S.C. The Golden Griffins started the day by beat Eastern Kentucky 14-6 in five innings before closing out Jacksonville by a count of 5-0. The Griffs have now won six straight.

For the day, junior Kerry Ulmer went a combined 4-for-7 with two homers, three RBIs and three runs scored, while senior Michelle Fridey went 3-for-6 with a double, a homer, six runs batted in and two runs scored. As a team, Canisius hit .379 in the two games and racked up 19 runs on 22 hits.

In the first game against Eastern Kentucky (0-6), the Griffs pounded out 12 runs on 14 hits, with Ulmer, Fridey, Lauren Hope, Amanda Cannizzo and Katie Medina all registering multiple hits in the victory.
The Lady Colonels scored held a 3-1 lead after the first inning, but the Blue and Gold registered six runs in the bottom of the second frame to take control of the ball game. Ulmer started the scoring spree with a solo homer to start the frame and junior Paige Freiberger delivered the biggest blow of the inning when she went yard for her first college grand slam.

Sophomore Caroline Main earned her third-straight win in the circle after she gave up six runs on seven hits while fanning three in five innings of work.

In the nightcap, the Griffs pushed their record over .500 for the first time this season with a 5-0 win over Jacksonville. Freshman pitcher Amanda Baun went the distance and struck out three while giving up just four hits to the Dolphins, who slipped to 8-3 on the year with the loss.

The Griffs got on the board first in the top of the second on an RBI-single by Cannizzo, and then the Griffs pushed runs across the plate in the top half of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Canisius scored twice, with Fridey and Emily Helbig being credited with RBI-base hits.

Canisius will return to action on Saturday with a pair of contest on the second day of the Kickin' Chicken Classic, which is being hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Griffs will meet DePaul and Coastal Carolina.
