The Canisius College softball team improved to 4-5 on the
season with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Hampton on Sunday, posting a
12-1 win in five innings before taking down the Pirates 5-1 in the nightcap.
Hampton is now 0-4 on the season.
In the first game, Canisius ended the contest in the fifth
after scoring eight runs in the top of the inning. The Griffs took a 3-1 lead
in the second, with Lauren Hope and Michelle Fridey driving in runs. In the fourth,
Katie Lancellotti ripped an RBI-double to give the Blue and Gold a 4-1 lead.
Those runs were more than enough for sophomore Caroline Main, who won her
second-straight start in the circle for the Griffs. Main earned the win after
she gave up one run on three hits while striking out five in five innings of
work.
Hope went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and four RBIs
in the game one win, while Fridey added a double and two runs batted in.
Lancellotti had a double and two RBIs, while sophomore Emily Helbig went
4-for-4 in the winning effort.
In the second game, Canisius freshman Amanda Baun earned her
second collegiate win after she fanned 10 and gave up five hits in the 5-1
victory. Canisius wasted little time scoring in the second game with two runs
in the top of the first on an RBI-groundout by Paige Freiberger. Fridey made it
3-1 in the third with an RBI-base hit and she later scored on a Hampton
throwing error. Lizzy Gatto added an RBI-single of her own in the third to cap
the Griffs' scoring.
The Griffs will return to action Friday, Feb. 26, when the
team takes on Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville on the first day of the
"Kickin' Chicken Classic" in Conway, S.C.
