The Canisius College softball team posted its first two wins
of the 2010 season on Saturday as the Golden Griffins swept Norfolk State by
scores of 7-0 and 8-0. The Blue and Gold improved to 2-5 on the year with the
victories.
In the first game, Canisius sophomore pitcher Caroline Main
posted her first complete-game shutout win as she held the Spartans (1-3) to
one hit while striking out five. The Griffs gave Main all the support she needed
with four runs in the top of the second. Freshman Katie Medina put the Griffs
on the board with a sacrifice fly that allowed teammate Amanda Cannizzo to
cross the dish before teammate Lauren Hope and Lizzy Gatto followed with base
hits of their own. Gatto's hit through the left side of the infield knocked in fellow
sophomore Lauren Falzone. Senior Michelle Fridey drove in two more runs moments
later when she doubled to center, allowing Hope and Gatto to score.
Gatto added an RBI single in the top of the fourth to give
the Griffs a 5-0 lead, and Fridey drove in her third RBI of the contest with a
sac fly to left. Canisius pounded out nine hits in the game one win and took
advantage of two Norfolk State errors.
In the nightcap, freshman hurler Amanda Baun posted her
first career win in the circle for the Blue and Gold after she threw a
three-hit shutout where she struck out 14 batters in the team's 8-0 victory.
The Griffs scored three runs in the top of the second, with Hope driving in two
runs on a single to center with two outs. After adding a single tally in the
fourth on an RBI-single by junior Emily Helbig, the Griffs sealed the sweep
with a four-run seventh, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of
sophomore shortstop Katie Lancellotti.
Helbig and junior Paige Freiberger each had a double and an
RBI in the nightcap win for Canisius, which improved to 6-1 all-time against
Norfolk State.
The Griffs will close out their weekend road trip to the
state of Virginia on Sunday with a non-league twinbill at Hampton. First pitch
is set for 11 a.m.
