Long Island University pounded out five runs on 11 hits and
LIU senior pitcher Blaire Porter scattered seven hits over seven innings of
work as the Blackbirds dropped Canisius 5-1 in a non-conference, neutral site
softball game Monday morning in Tampa, Fla. The win improves Long Island to 3-2
on the year, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 0-5.
Seven Canisius players had one hit on the day, with
sophomore Lizzy Gatto going 1-for-1 with an RBI. The Griffs scored their lone run
in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Amanda Cannizzo started off the frame by
reaching via an error, and then advanced to second base on a base hit by senior
Michelle Fridey. After Canisius made an out, Gatto stroked a base hit to right
to knock in Cannizzo. Later in the frame, Katie Lancellotti drew a two-out walk
to load the bases, but the Griffs were unable to push another run across the
plate and the frame ended.
Long Island scored single run in the top half of the third
on a sacrifice fly, and then added two more runs in the fifth to take a 3-0
lead. Brynn Lewis, who finished the day by going 3-for-4 at the plate, drove in
both runs with an RBI-single through the right side of the infield after the
first two batters in the inning got on base with a walk and a base hit.
Porter earned the win for the Blackbirds to improve to 3-0
in the circle this season. Canisius sophomore Caroline Main was charged with
the loss after she gave up three runs on seven hits to go with three walks in
four innings. Freshman hurler Amanda Baun came on in relief of Main and allowed
two runs, neither of which were earned, on four hits while fanning two.
The Griffs will return to action Saturday, Feb. 20, when the
team plays a non-conference doubleheader at Norfolk State. First pitch is set
for 1 p.m.
