Iona Defeats Women's Basketball

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Iona used its inside game to build a first-half lead and maintained it throughout the second half as the Canisius College women's basketball team lost 63-47 at the Hynes Athletic Center on Monday. The Golden Griffins fall to 10-15 overall and 5-9 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Senior Ellie Radke led Canisius with 10 points to go along with nine rebounds. Senior Brianna Lucas had nine points on 3-for-3 shooting from behind the arc. Junior Micayla Drysdale had eight points, all in the second half.

“We didn't compete from the start as Iona came out with more energy than us. Iona pounded it inside and then kicked it out to make some outside shots,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “When we made some shots in the second half, our intensity level increased, but that's too late. We need that type of energy for 40 minutes to win conference games.”

After Lucas made a 3-pointer on the first offensive possession of the game for the Griffs, Iona (14-10, 10-3 MAAC) scored 16 consecutive points. Anna McLean had eight of the first 11 points for the Gaels. The Griffs responded with seven straight points — two free throws from Brittané Russell, a 3-ponter from Radke and a basket from Tasia Lee to make the score 16-10. Iona held Canisius to one field goal the rest of the half, pushing the lead to 33-14 at the break.

Canisius scored the first eight points of the second half to make it 33-22 after back-to-back 3-pointers from Radke and Drysdale. That 11-point deficit would be as close as Canisius would get, never trimming the Iona lead to single digits.

McLean and Kristina Ford each had a double-double as McLean had 16 points and 15 rebounds while Ford recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds. Iona held a 54-40 advantage on the boards.

Canisius takes on rival Niagara in the Koessler Athletic Center on Friday, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. The contest will serve as a “Pink Zone” game to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

Notes: Canisius extended its NCAA record of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 479 games on a 3-pointer by Lucas on the Griffs' first offensive possession… Canisius drops the season series to Iona for the third time in the last four seasons… For the 15th time in the last 17 meetings, a game between Canisius and Iona was decided by double digits… Canisius is 5-9 in the MAAC for the second time in the last four seasons... Drysdale had multiple 3-pointers in a game for the 12th time this season and 43rd time in her career.
