The Canisius College softball team closed out play at the USF Wilson-DeMarini Tournament with a pair of losses on Sunday, falling to Illinois State 4-1 in the morning before dropping a 6-1 decision to host South Florida in the nightcap. The Golden Griffins are now 0-4 on the season.
In the first game, the Griffs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI-double to right off the bat of senior Michelle Fridey, which allowed teammate Katie Medina to score. The Redbirds answered with two runs in the bottom half of that frame, when Jhavon Hamilton tripled to right field scoring Nichelle Harrison, who singled to get on base. The second run came when Hamilton scored on a wild pitch by Caroline Main.
In the bottom of the sixth, Illinois State (1-2) added two more runs on the scoreboard when Elizabeth Kay hit a two-run homer off losing pitcher Caroline Main. Main took the loss for the Griffs after she gave up four runs on six hits while striking out six in six innings of work.
Canisius registered two hits off winning pitcher Megan Warner. Warner fanned five for her first win of the year.
In the nightcap, freshman pitcher Lindsey Richardson earned a win in her first college start as the host South Florida Bulls dropped the Blue and Gold 6-1. Richardson went the distance, allowing seven hits to go with 11 strikeouts.
South Florida (2-2) scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead off freshman hurler Amanda Baun. Baun took the loss after she gave up six runs, five earned, in seven innings.
For Canisius, Fridey went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple, while junior Kerry Ulmer registered an RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh that plated sophomore Lizzy Gatto.
The softball team will return to action Monday when the team plays Long Island in a neutral site game in Tampa, Fla. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
