After an impressive collegiate debut, Canisius College freshman goaltender Tony Capobianco was honored by Atlantic Hockey on Monday, earning the league's Rookie of the
Week accolades.
Making his first career appearance on Saturday, Capobianco
stopped 39 shots in a 1-1 draw against Connecticut to anchor the Canisius
defense. The rookie was particularly strong on the penalty kill. He helped kill
all four Huskies power plays, including a five-minute major that spanned the
third and overtime periods, stopping 14 shots while the team was a man down.
Capobianco became the first Canisius goaltender to record a
point in his collegiate debut since Ryan Hatch earned a 2-1 victory against RIT
on Oct. 22, 2005.
The weekly honor for Capobianco marked the third-straight
week that a Griff has earned Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week accolades. Kyle Gibbons earned the award in each
of the last two weeks.
Capobianco and the Griffs return to the ice on Saturday,
hosting Holy Cross. Game time at the Buffalo State Sports Arena is scheduled
for 3:35 p.m.
