Hockey Defeated by Sacred Heart in AHA Opener

Sacred Heart used goals from three different players and a 26-save performance from Jack Spicer to post a 3-2 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey America action Friday at Martire Family Arena in Fairfield, Conn.

Michael Rubin, Emmanuel Vermette and Aidan VanRooyan all found the back of the net for the Pioneers (5-4-0, 2-1-0 AHA), providing enough support for Spicer, who surrendered just two power-play goals to earn his second win of the season.

Junior Hunter Price tallied a goal and an assist and senior Noah Quinn accounted for the first goal for the Golden Griffins (3-5-1, 0-1-0 AHA). Sophomore FJ Buteau picked up two assists while freshman goaltender Jack Lisson made 14 saves between the pipes for the visitors.

Rubin opened the scoring moments after the 17-minute mark of the first period, beating Lisson with a wrist shot to the glove side during a rush opportunity to give the Pioneers the lead.

Vermette doubled the SHU advantage at the 6:07 mark of the middle frame when he snuck a wrist shot past the glove of Lisson from the right face-off circle for his second goal of the season.

Quinn got the Griffs on the board just past the midway point of the contest with a power-play goal, placing a one-timer past a sprawling Spicer from the left face-off circle to make it a 2-1 contest.
VanRooyan restored the Pioneers two-goal cushion with less than three seconds to play in the middle frame, firing a wrist shot past the blocker of Lisson during a 2-on-1 rush to give the home team a 3-1 advantage.

Price brought Canisius within one early in the third on the power play when he placed a backhand past Spicer from the slot during a scramble to trim the Griffs deficit to 3-2.
That would be as close as the Griffs would get, as Spicer and the Pioneers held on to secure the one-goal victory.
