BALTIMORE - Siena
forward Tabitha Tice scored 2:10 into the first overtime session to help lift
the third-seeded Saints to a 1-0 overtime victory over the Canisius College
women's soccer team Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the 2010
Chick-fil-A MAAC Women's Soccer Championships in Baltimore. With the win, the
Saints (17-3) advance to the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament next
weekend, while the Golden Griffins see their season come to an end with a 14-7
mark.
After the two teams played through
90 scoreless minutes, Siena's attack pushed the ball forward in the opening
minutes of overtime and forward Caitlin Cahalan was able to flick a pass from
the top right-hand side of the box, where it was settled by Tice, who ripped a
shot from 15-yards out for the game-winning tally. The goal for Tice was her 11th
of the season, and she was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for her
efforts.
"I am very proud of the girls' effort," Canisius head coach Jim Wendling said. "This team played as hard as they could today. They gave 100 percent and we had some opportunities, but they didn't go our way. I am certainly proud of this season and the way we played all year."
Canisius, which was outshot 21-10
for the contest, had a great chance to take a 1-0 lead midway through the
second half when junior Kelly Reinwald was
able to break away from her defender and get off a bad-angle shot that slid
past Siena goalkeeper Elizabeth Barna and rolled along the goal line before it
hit the far post and bounced back towards the field where it was cleared away
by the Saints' defense. On the day Barna made two stops for Siena, including a
big save in a 1-v-1 situation against junior Jenny Griffin in the opening moments of the
second stanza.
Canisius senior goalie Lesley Ivinac made seven saves in net
for the Blue and Gold in the loss, including a few key saves early as the
Saints came out firing, holding a 4-0 advantage in shots just 20 minutes into
the game.
Ivinac, senior Laura Ellis and freshman Brianna
Smith were named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team for their
efforts in the Griffs' two games. Ivinac made a total of 13 stops on the
weekend while becoming the first Canisius goalkeeper in program history to
record a shutout in MAAC Championship play, while Smith, the 2010 MAAC Rookie
of the Year, scored the Griffs' lone goal in the 1-0 semifinal win over Rider
Friday afternoon.

tournament, which the Griffs lost to Loyola... The Griffs' 14 wins in 2010 sets a
new school record for wins in a single-season, passing last year's
record-setting total of 13... Sunday's overtime game marked the fifth time in
MAAC history the women's soccer championship went into extra session, with the
last OT game coming in 1999... Siena claims its first women's soccer championship
in school history with the win.
