Canisius freshman Brianna Smith scored two goals and the Golden Griffin offense added four more to complete a 6-0 win over the Saint Peter's Peahens at the Demske Sports Complex Sunday afternoon as the team celebrated Senior Day. With the win, Canisius ends its regular season with a 13-6-0 overall record and 7-2-0 in the MAAC and earned the top-seed in the 2010 Chick-Fil-A MAAC Woman's Soccer Championships next week in Baltimore.

Before the game, the Blue and Gold honored six seniors who were about to play in their final game at the Demske Sports Complex. Seniors Sarah Galante, Camille Blum, Jessica Leemans, Lesley Ivinac, Kasey Makowski and Laura Ellis all took part in a pregame ceremony recognizing their careers as a Griff.

Canisius would continue the excitement from the pre-match festivities and carry it over onto the field as the Blue and Gold opened the scoring in the 19th minute as junior Jenny Griffin took a pass from Smith and put the Griffs ahead 1-0. Smith would push the lead to 2-0 in the 34th minute as she put forth a tremendous individual effort to score her 13th goal of the season. The score would stay 2-0 heading into halftime, as the Griffs outshot the Peahens 10-2 in the game's first 45 minutes.

Canisius continued its offensive onslaught as Smith would score her second of tally of the day receiving a pass from Makowski putting the Blue and Gold up 3-0. The Griffs added another score less then six minutes later when junior Kelly Reinwald scored her 11th goal of the season as Makowski added her second helper of the afternoon. The Blue and Gold would receive late goals from Griffin and freshman Liz Lorence to seal the victory over the Peahens. 

"Being MAAC regular season champions is just great and the girls deserve it," Canisius College head coach Jim Wendling said. "We've been to the semifinal round in the MAAC tournament twice in the last two years and lost both times, but we're more mature now and we just have to go out there play our game and play hard and see what happens."

Freshman goalkeeper Megan Tock started the game and made seven saves to earn her third win of the season. Freshman Deanna Bowers relieved Tock late in the second half and made three saves in the first action of her college career. In addition to her five-point afternoon, Smith also led the team in shots with six.

The women's soccer will return to action on Friday, Nov. 5, as the team takes its No. 1 overall seed into the 2010 Chick-Fil-A MAAC Woman's Soccer Championship. The Griffs will take on the fourth-seeded Rider Broncs, with game time set for 3 p.m.

Game Notes: With the win Canisius improves it's all-time series record against Saint Peter's to 17-4-0... Canisius finishes the season with the best conference-record in program history, going 7-2-0 against MAAC foes... Smith is now fifth on the Canisius College single-season goal scoring chart recording 13 tallies in 2010... Both Smith and Reinwald are tied for fifth on the school's single-season points chart with each player posting 33 points through the regular season... The 13 wins for the Griffs ties the school record for most victories in a season, a record this year's squad shares with the 2009 team.
