Women's Soccer Hosts Big MAAC Weekend

Women's Soccer Canisius College Athletics

Women's Soccer Slips Past Manhattan 1-0

Junior Kelly Reinwald scored her 10th goal of the season in the 87th minute to lift the Canisius College women's soccer team to their sixth MAAC victory of the year as they downed the Manhattan Lady Jaspers 1-0 at the Demske Sports Complex Friday night. The Golden Griffins' record now stands at 12-6-0 overall and 6-2-0 in MAAC play.

The Golden Griffins and the Lady Jaspers exchanged scoring chances through the first half as both teams were tied with 10 shots at the end of the first 45 minutes of play. Senior goalkeeper Lesley Ivinac, who started the game in net for the Blue and Gold, collided with a Manhattan forward when she contested a scoring chance late in the first half and was replaced by freshman Megan Tock. Manhattan would control play for much of the second half, firing nine shots towards the Canisius net, but Tock was up to the task. It wouldn't be until the 87th minute when senior Kasey Makowski cut towards the corner of the box and centered a pass across the goal-mouth, where Reinwald drilled it home for the 1-0 lead. The Canisius defense was able to clamp down for the last four minutes to secure the victory for the Blue and Gold.

"I just charged to the net because I knew Kasey was going to send it across and I was able to knock it in," said Reinwald. "We knew we had to keep working hard because the defense had done such a great job for us that we wanted to do our part as well. It was a great effort."

Ivinac would start the game in net and made two saves before leaving the contest. Tock came in and earned her second career victory and her first win MAAC play after making five saves. The Lady Jaspers edged the Griffs in shots 19-18 but the Griffs led in corner kicks 6-3.

The women's soccer will play their final regular season game on Sunday when the Griffs host the Saint Peter's Peahens at 1 p.m. Canisius will be celebrating Senior Day, as the team will honor six seniors who will be playing their last home game at the Demske Sports Complex.

Game Notes: With the win Canisius College improves their record to 10-7-2 in the overall series history against Manhattan... Canisius is now 6-1-0 at the Demske Sports Complex in 2010... The Griffs are now one home win shy of tying a school record for home victories in a single season set during the 1998 campaign...  Kelly Reinwald is now tied for fifth all-time in school history with Canisius Hall of Fame Stacy Wagenseil (1991) with 30 points scored in one year.
