Freshman forward Brianna Smith (Buffalo, N.Y.) and senior goalkeeper Lesley Ivinac both earned conference
weekly awards as Smith was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week while Ivinac
was took Defensive Player of the week honors for their performances against
Fairfield and Iona this past weekend.
Smith
powered the Golden Griffin's offense over the weekend recording two dual-goal
performances against the Stags and Gaels as she led the Griffs to their fourth
and fifth MAAC wins of the season. Smith is the second freshman under head
coach Jim Wendling to record a double-digit goal total in a season as Canisius
teammate Kelly Reinwald accomplished
the feat in 2008. Smith is now tied for second in the MAAC in points (28) and goals
(12). This is the third time this year that Smith has been honored by the MAAC
as she previously earned two Rookie of the Week awards.
Ivinac
earns the honor after recording 19 total saves through two games recording her
third shutout of the season. She helped lead the Griffs to a two-win weekend
including a 4-2 victory on Friday against the Fairfield Stags where she
recorded nine saves and earned a 10-save shutout on Sunday against the Iona
Gaels. Ivinac has quietly put together a solid senior campaign for the Blue and
Gold as she has gone 10-4-0 in 2010 while compiling 1.41 goals-against-average
and three shutouts for the season. She ranks third in the MAAC with 83 saves
this season. This is the second Defensive Player of the Week award for Ivinac this year.
Women's
Soccer will be back in action as they host the final two games of their regular
season when they welcome Manhattan and Saint Peter's to the Demske Sports
Complex on Friday and Sunday. Game times are set for 5 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m
on Sunday.
