Senior
Laura Ellis scored her second goal
of the season in the 79th minute but it wouldn't be enough as the
Canisius College women's soccer team dropped their first home game of the year
to the Marist Red Foxes at the Demske Sports Complex by a score of 3-1 Sunday
afternoon. The Golden Griffins are now 9-6-0 overall and 3-2-0 in MAAC play while Marist improves to 9-7-0 overall and 5-1-0 in league action.
"We came
up short today," Canisius College head coach Jim Wendling said. "We didn't give our best effort, no excuses. We
had opportunities and didn't take advantage and that made the difference."
The
Golden Griffins and Red Foxes played a scoreless first half as Marist out shot
the Blue and Gold 7-5. In what has been the Griffs most dominant half in 2010,
it was Marist that gave the first blow as Jaclynn Sabia scored in the 47th
minute to put the Red Foxes up 1-0. Kathryn Hannis made it 2-0 just three
minutes later lofting a shot over senior goalkeeper Lesley Ivinac in the 50th minute of play. Canisius would
find offensive life later in the half as Ellis took a lead passes from freshman Brianna Smith and junior Jenny Griffin and slipped it past
Marist goalkeeper Jamie Balzarini to cut the deficit to 2-1. However Marist's
offense would not let up, as Jackie Frey weaved her way through the Canisius
defense and crossed a pass over to Sabia who took advantage for her second
tally of the contest in the 88th minute to seal the victory for Marist
with a final score of 3-1.
Ivinac
made her 10th start of the season as she made four saves allowing
three goals as she was credited with the loss. Balzarini mad six saves allowing
one goal for the win. Junior Kelly
Reinwald tried to supply the Griffs with more offense firing a team-leading
seven shots, five of which were on goal.
The women's
soccer team will return to action Oct. 22 when the team plays at Fairfield. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Game Notes: Marist now leads the all-time series between the two schools by a 9-5-0 count... The Griffs are 5-1-0 at home in 2010... Ellis' goal was the ninth in her career.
