Junior
Jenny Griffin scored in the 104th
minute of play to lift the Canisius College women's soccer team to a 3-2 double overtime win over No. 25 Siena at the Demske Sports Complex on Friday night. With the win Canisius
improves to 9-4-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the MAAC while Siena falls to 12-1-0
overall and 4-1-0 in MAAC play.
"I think
it's a fantastic win for the girls and for this program," Canisius College head
coach Jim Wendling said. "Siena is a
good team and they outshot us and had more corner kicks than us, but we played
hard and kept working until the end."
Siena
opened the scoring in the 20th minute as Brittany Pfaff scored off a
header to put the Saints up 1-0. The score would stay that way until Caroline Robert fired home a loose ball
in the box to tie the game at 1-1 in the 46th minute. Canisius
freshman Brianna Smith scored her
eighth goal of the year as she took a pass from junior Kelly Reinwald to give the Griffs the go-ahead tally and a 2-1 lead. Siena would tie the game up at 2-2 off the foot of
Lindsay Tegas with an assist credited to Ashleigh Barone just 1:35 later. The Griffs
and Saints exchanged chances through one overtime period but in the second
overtime period Griffin found a loose ball and fired it home for the Griffs'
fifth overtime victory of the season.
Senior
Lesley Ivinac made seven saves and
allowed two goals to earn her eighth win of the year. Siena goalkeeper Laura
Ettinger would be credited with the loss making four saves and allowing three
goals in the contest. Coming into the weekend, Siena was the last unbeaten,
untied Division I women's soccer team in the country.
"This
is a step in the right direction," Wendling said. "It shows everyone on this
team that we're talented enough to play and really compete with a top-25 team
in this country."
Women's soccer will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when the team plays host to
MAAC rival Marist at the Demske Sports Complex at 1 p.m.
