Canisius College sophomore Stephanie MacDonald and Team Canada finished in fourth place at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championships in Thailand. The fourth-place finish is the highest finish for Team Canada in the event's history.
Team Canada, who qualified for the quarterfinals and semifinals for the first time ever, advanced to the semifinals with a 50-49 victory over No. 1 seed Australia in the round of eight. Canada then dropped both of its games in the medal round — losing 82-51 to Team USA, the eventual gold-medal winner, and falling 58-51 to Argentina in the bronze medal game.
In the bronze-medal game, Argentina pulled away in the second half, building a 45-32 lead at the end of the third quarter. Canada battled back to tie the game at 50-50 in the fourth quarter before Argentina scored eight of the final nine points to close out the contest.
MacDonald played in all nine games for Team Canada in the competition. Canada finished 3-3 in pool play, recording wins over Tunisia, Japan and China. MacDonald's top performances came in the wins over Japan (10 points in 23 minutes) and Tunisia (nine points in 20 minutes).
MacDonald and Canada finished in second place at the FIBA Americas U18 Championships last summer in Argentina. MacDonald averaged 7.4 points per game in that competition.
