Women's Basketball Opens Italy Tour with 92-66 Victory

CANTU', ITALY — After a sloppy first quarter, the Canisius College women's basketball team settled down and ran away with a 92-66 victory over All-Star Lombardia on Sunday night in the first game of their Italy Tour '09.

Senior Ellie Radke led the Griffs with 33 points in 31 minutes, shooting 14-for-17 in the game while going 4-for-5 on 3-pointers. Sophomore Stephanie MacDonald had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, Junior Micayla Drysdale had 17 points and Brittané Russell had seven assists and zero turnovers in 21 minutes.

In a hot gymnasium, the teams played a first quarter filled with turnovers as Canisius committed 11 turnovers in the opening 10 minutes. With the score 17-15 entering the second quarter, MacDonald scored seven straight points as an 11-3 run ignited the Griffs to extend their lead. Lombardia hit a 3-pointer late in the second quarter to make it 45-36 at halftime.

Canisius put the game away in the third quarter by allowing Lombardia to score only six points and going up 70-42 after 30 minutes.

The Griffs will play their second game of the Italy Tour '09 on Thursday.
