The Canisius College women's lacrosse team won for the third time in four games, winning at Binghamton on Sunday, 12-11. With the victory, the Griffs improved to 4-4 on the season.
“I thought we worked real hard and played a good game for 60 minutes today,” said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. “Our midfield played really well today and that was the difference for us.”
Senior Chelsea Martinez led the Griffs with five points and four goals and in the process, became the fourth player in school history to record her 100th career point. The senior has now accumulated 103 points on 93 goals and 10 assists during her collegiate career.
Senior Ashley Gray added a hat trick for the Griffs, while freshmen Rachel Brand and Theresa Walton each posted two goals. Freshman Ashley Curtis rounded out the scoring for Canisius with a goal and an assist, while junior Brett Poissant added two assists.
Sophomore Allison Daley anchored the Griffs defense with 13 saves in net. Martinez also led Canisius with five draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Canisius started the game strong, racing to a 4-1 and 7-3 advantage. Gray started the game with a goal 2:42 into the contest and after a Bearcat score, Martinez ripped off two goals and Walton also tallied a score. Binghamton would score the next two goals but Gray, Martinez and Walton responded with scores to give Canisius a four-goal lead, 7-3.
The Bearcats (2-3) scored the final goal of the first half and then tallied the first three goals of the second stanza to knot the game at seven with 25:33 left in the game. However, the Griffs would quickly reclaim the advantage with three-straight goals. Gray gave the Griffs the lead for good with her third score of the night and then Martinez and Brand followed to give Canisius a 10-7 advantage.
Binghamton cut the lead to one, 11-10, but Curtis scored off a feed Martinez with 3:16 left in the game to seal Canisius' victory. Binghamton scored with 1:30 left in the game but Gray won the ensuing draw control and the Griffs held possession for the win.
Canisius is back in action on Tuesday, playing at St. Bonaventure in a non-conference matchup. First draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Game Notes: Martinez joins Gray and former teammates Lauren Walsh and Whitney Card as the only Griffs to record 100 career points. She is just seven goals shy of becoming the third player to record 100 career goals ... Brand's goals are a career-high total ... Poissant is now tied for eighth with 17 career assists ... Canisius holds a 5-1 advantage in the all-time series.
