Women's Basketball Sets Wins Record By Defeating Niagara

Holding Niagara to 12 field goals, the Canisius College women's basketball team earned a 65-39 victory over the Purple Eagles on Saturday, on Senior Day in the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Golden Griffins finish the regular season with a 22-7 record, setting the program's Division I record for wins in a season. Canisius posts a 14-4 record in the MAAC, earning the No. 2 seed in next week's Citizens Bank MAAC Tournament in the Times Union Center in Albany and will play on Friday, at 9:30 a.m., facing the winner of Thursday's Rider-Niagara game.

Senior Marie Warner led all players with 15 points and 14 rebounds, recording her 10th double-double of the season. Freshman Stephanie MacDonald had 12 points in 27 minutes off the bench while senior Amanda Cavo had 11 points, going 3-for-9 from behind the arc.

“Setting the wins record is a reflection of all the hard work and sacrifices this team made in the offseason and since practice started in October,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We'll head to Albany and work toward accomplishing our next goal of a MAAC championship."

With the score 11-9 and just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half, Canisius took control of the game by holding Niagara to 14 points and five field goals during the next 21 minutes. The Griffs extended the lead to as many as 27 points, with a 3-pointer from Micayla Drysdale making the score 52-25.

During that stretch, Canisius got three 3-pointers from Cavo, 10 free throws on 10 attempts from Warner and three steals from Brittan? Russell.

Liz Flooks led Niagara (2-27, 1-17 MAAC) with 10 points, the only Purple Eagle to reach double figures. Kristina Walton had nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Canisius, the No. 2 seed in next week's Citizens Bank MAAC Tournament, will play on Friday, at 9:30 a.m. in the Times Union Center in Albany, facing the winner of Thursday's Rider-Niagara game.
