Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Downs Mercyhurst

Junior Shariah Gailes put up a season-high 28 points to power Canisius to a 75-67 win over Mercyhurst in non-conference women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Sophomore Corniya Clay added 14 points while fellow sophomore Irene Rey Pineda chipped in 12 to pace a Golden Griffins (1-7) offense that saw three players finish in double figures. Gailes recorded a game-high nine rebounds as Canisius enjoyed a 44-30 advantage on the glass. As a team, the Blue and Gold shot 54.9 percent (28-for-51) from the field and 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from 3-point range.

Mercyhurst was led by Cici Hernandez, who tallied a team-high 20 points. Lena Waltz chipped in 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the visiting Lakers.

Trailing 26-14 in the opening stages of the second quarter, a jumper in the paint from Gailes ignited a 23-4 Canisius run that lasted until the halftime buzzer and gave the Griffs a 37-30 lead. Five different Griffs contributed to the second-quarter surge, highlighted by 10 from Gailes, who knocked down four of her five field goals during the nearly nine-minute run.

Mercyhurst battled back in the opening stages of the third quarter as it notched nine of the first 10 points of the second half to retake the lead, 39-38.

The Griffs regained momentum moments later, using a 9-3 spurt to grab a 46-40 edge before the teams exchanged baskets over the remainder of the frame to give Canisius a four-point lead heading into the final frame.

The fourth quarter saw the Griffs maintain their advantage through the remainder of the contest, expanding their cushion to as many as 12 before settling on an eight point margin of victory for their first win of the campaign.
