Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Comeback Pushes Women's Basketball Past Wright State

Senior Franka Wittenberg scored eight of Canisius' final 10 points in the closing 2:41 of the fourth quarter to help push the Golden Griffins to a 65-60 comeback win over Wright State in non-conference women's basketball action Friday night at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Junior Shariah Gailes scored a game-high 20 points in the victory for the Griffs, who improved to 2-7 on the season with their second consecutive victory.
Wright State fell to 5-7 on the year with the loss.

A bucket by Ellie Magestro-Kennedy put the visiting Raiders up 60-55 with 2:41 remaining, but Wittenberg got the Griffs' rally started one minute later after she knocked down a pair of free-throws. Moments later, Wittenberg trimmed Wright State's lead to 60-59 with two more makes from the stripe, and with 31 seconds remaining in the final quarter, the Hildesheim, Germany native put the home team up for good with a lay-up, making the score 61-60 in favor of the Blue and Gold.

Gailes gave the Griffs a three-point cushion with a pair of free-throw makes of her own with 11 seconds left on the clock, and Wittenberg capped the night's scoring with a pair of free-throws with less than five seconds showing on the clock. Canisius closed out the game's final 10:00 by hitting 10-of-11 chances from the free-throw line.

Sophomore Corniya Clay chipped in 12 points in the win for Canisius after she knocked down four 3-point field goals in the game's opening 2half, and junior Antonique Auston added 10 points to the Griffs' winning cause. Wittenberg also led the way on the glass, as she grabbed 10 rebounds in the win for her second double-double performance of the season. For the game, Canisius out-rebounded Wright State, 49-17, which included 21 offensive rebounds for the Blue and Gold.

Magestro-Kennedy scored a team-high 12 points for Wright State in the loss, while teammate Olivia Brown added 11 points. Claire Henson grabbed a team-high six rebounds for the visiting Raiders, who shot 41.4 percent from the floor, but made just 5-of-25 shots from 3-point land and just 9-of-14 tosses from the free-throw line.
