Boston College Defeats Women's Lacrosse

Boston College used a 9-2 run spanning the end of the first half and start of the second half to pull away from the Canisius College women's lacrosse team for an 18-13 victory at the Demske Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Ashley Gray led Canisius (1-2) with four goals and five points as senior Chelsea Martinez and freshman Theresa Walton each had three goals for the Griffs. Sophomore Brianne Laffey led the Golden Griffins with three assists.

“In the first half, we didn't come ready to play. Our defense was nonexistent and we didn't compete.” Canisius coach Scott Teeter said.” In the second half, we played much better, but we dug ourselves too deep of a hole in the first half. We need to play for 60 minutes.”

During a fast-pace start to the game that featured 12 goals in the opening 15 minutes, Canisius battled from a 4-1 deficit to get within two at 6-4. The Griffs got two goals from Martinez and a goal from Walton during the run.

The Eagles closed the half by scoring five of six goals, getting two from Jenna McCabe, who led all players in the game with six goals on the day.

After Gray scored with 25:24 remaining in the game to make it 11-6, Boston College scored four straight goals to build its biggest lead of the game at 15-6.

Canisius scored six of the final nine goals of the game, capped by an unassisted goal from Gray in the final seconds.

Lauren Costello and Maura Mahoney each had three goals for Boston College while Jill Amo and Nicole Tufariello each scored twice.

Katie Monaghan picked up the win for Boston College making five saves. Canisius goalie Allison Daley had seven saves in the loss.

Canisius plays on Saturday, Feb. 28, when the Golden Griffins host Duquesne at the Demske Sports Complex.
