Parker?s Jumper Gives Rider Win Over Women's Basketball

Shaunice Parker hit a jumper from the top of the key with 3.3 seconds remaining to give Rider a 56-55 victory over the Canisius College women's basketball team in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The loss ends a four-game winning streak for Canisius as the Golden Griffins are now 16-6 on the season and 8-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Junior Ellie Radke led Canisius with 13 points and was one of three Griffs to grab five rebounds in the game. Sophomore Micayla Drysdale had 11 points, five assists and one turnover while junior Brittan? Russell had six points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

“We didn't deserve to win that game today. Down seven, a team needs everything to go perfect to pull out the win and it didn't happen,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “Our offense struggled to get going for the majority of the game. When we decided to start playing hard, it was too late.”

Canisius trailed 52-45 after Tammy Myers split two free throws for Rider with 2:32 remaining. Warner came down and made a 3-pointer to end a scoreless drought of more than nine minutes for Canisius and end Rider's run of 14 consecutive points.

After Canisius forced a turnover, senior Amanda Cavo made two free throws to get Canisius within two and after Parker missed a jumper, Cavo nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give Canisius the 53-52 lead.

Cintella Spotwood missed a jumper, but Myers grabbed the offensive rebound and connected on a baseline jumper to put Rider back up 54-53. Russell charged up the court and made a layup with 14 seconds remaining to give Canisius the advantage.

Rider responded for one last time when Parker made her jumper from the top of the key to make it 56-55. A desperation attempt from Marie Warner hit the backboard as time expired.

Myers led Rider (8-14, 5-6 MAAC) with 18 points while Amanda Sepulveda had 12 points. Parker had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Canisius starts a four-game road trip on Friday, when the Golden Griffins play at Marist. Game time at the McCann Center is set for 7:30 p.m.
