The Canisius College men's soccer team got a goal from
freshman Sam Margetts and took advantage of a late own goal by Siena to secure
a 2-1 victory over Siena Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex on
Senior Day. The win, which was the Golden Griffins' second-straight, improved
the team to 5-10-2 overall and 4-3 in MAAC play, while the Saints slipped to
8-7-3 overall and 3-3-2 in conference action.
Margetts scored his second goal in as many games in the contest's
32nd minute off an assist by teammate Alan McGreal. As Canisius
charged up the field, McGreal took the ball to the left side of the box, and
fed Margetts with a crossing pass, which the Mahoenui, New Zealand native
banged home. The assist for McGreal was his team-leading fourth assist of the
season and gives the Dublin, Ireland native the program record for assists in a
career with 29.
Siena knotted the game at 1-1 in the opening moments of the
second half after Sindre Ek took a feed in the box from teammate Steve Covino
to beat Canisius keeper Luke Seymour in
the 47th minute. The game would remain tied at 1-1 until the 87:31
mark when Siena was charged with an own goal. As the Griffs applied offensive
pressure, the ball got loose in the box to the left of the Siena net, and in an
effort to clear over the end line, a Siena defender headed the ball into the
back of his team's cage past goalkeeper Phil Chabot.
Seymour made five stops in net for Canisius, while Chabot
also finished the game with five saves. The Griffs held a 12-9 advantage in
shots and a 7-1 lead in corner kicks.
Prior to the start of the contest, Canisius honored its
graduating class of 2009, which currently stands as the winningest class in
program history with 26 victories after Sunday's win over Siena. Sunday's win
also moved the Blue and Gold into sole possession of fifth-place in the MAAC
standings with two regular season games remaining. The Griffs will close out
the regular season on the road next weekend, starting at Iona Friday, Nov. 6,
with game time set for 2 p.m.
