Hockey Names 2009-10 Captains

Canisius College head coach Dave Smith announced the captains for the 2009-10 season on Wednesday. Senior Peter MacDougall will serve as the team captain for the second-straight season, while classmates Dave Cianfrini and Josh Heidinger will be the team's assistant captains.

"I believe these three will do a terrific job of providing leadership and helping us in reaching our goal of a conference championship," Smith said. "It is an honor for the three individuals to be selected as a captain and to wear a letter on our team."

MacDougall, who is the fifth Griff to wear the "C" in multiple seasons since moving to Division I, played in all 37 games last season. He recorded a career-best 11 points on two goals and nine assists. During his career, MacDougall has posted 19 points, five goals and 14 assists. The senior has also earned the team's community outreach award in each of his three seasons with the Griffs.

Cianfrini has appeared in 106 games during his career, totaling 30 points, seven goals and 23 assists. The defender recorded 14 points during his junior campaign on one goal and 13 assists. His 13 helpers are tied for the third most by a Canisius defender in the program's Division I history. Cianfrini is also serving as a SAAC officer for the second-consecutive season and is a three-time Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team selection.

Heidinger will serve as the team's assistant captain for the second-straight season. The Buffalo native ranks among the best in the program's Division I history. He currently places fourth with 93 career points and second with 67 career assists. During the 2006-07 season, Heidinger tied the program's record with 26 assists. Last season, he ranked third on the team with 33 points, scoring nine goals and adding 24 helpers.

The Griffs open the season at home on Friday against Ferris State. Game time at the Buffalo State Sports Arena is set for 7:05 p.m.
