Men's Soccer Draws Buffalo, 1-1

The Canisius College men's soccer team battled local rival Buffalo to a 1-1 draw on Monday night. The Griffs are now 3-10-2 on the season, while Buffalo stands at 5-9-1.

Sophomore J.J. Hughes scored his first collegiate goal to lead the Canisius offense. Sophomore goalkeeper Luke Seymour stopped five shots in net.

The Griffs got on the scoreboard first, scoring 15 minutes into the contest. Senior Alan McGreal passed the ball to Hughes, who scored in the lower left corner of the net to give Canisius the early advantage.

Canisius would maintain its lead until the 56th minute of play. Dan Bulley scored from 12 yards out for his third goal of the season.

Both schools had opportunities to earn the victory but neither team was able to find the back of the net again. Each team fired three shots in overtime and one shot on goal but both goalkeepers were up to the task. Buffalo's Nick Fetterman recorded two saves to earn the draw.

Buffalo outshot the Griffs during the match, 18-11, and held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

Canisius returns to conference play on Friday, playing host to Marist. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 7 p.m.

Game Notes: The assist for McGreal gives him 28 for his career, tying him for the most in school history. Ryan Puntiri also registered 28 assists from 1996 to 1999 ... Canisius is now unbeaten in its last five games at UB Stadium, going 1-0-1 against the Bulls and 3-0-0 in UB Fall Classic matches ... The Griffs have scored at least one goal during the first half of play in their last four games after starting the season by scoring a first-period goal in just two of 11 contests.
