Women's Basketball Digs Out Win at Loyola

BALTIMORE ? Getting a combined 50 points from Marie Warner and Amanda Cavo, the Canisius College women's basketball team defeated Loyola 64-58 at Reitz Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins improve to 15-5 overall, 7-2 in the MAAC and have now won eight consecutive road games.

Warner led all players with her career-high 28 points while also recording 11 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double. Cavo had 22 points, including six 3-pointers.

“Loyola played well today and came out with energy looking to get a win. We were a little lethargic to start, but I felt we answered the bell,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “The points weren't just what Marie brought today but crashing the offensive glass, and Amanda gave us big shots when we needed them.”

Cavo and Warner combined for 32 of the Griffs' 34 points in the first half. Loyola scored the opening five points of the game and held the lead for the majority of the opening 20 minutes. The Greyhounds were up by as much as seven at 20-13 on a 3-pointer from Meredith Tolley at 9:05. The Griffs would take the lead two times in the first half and went into the locker room up 34-33 on a 3-pointer from Warner just before the buzzer.

Canisius buckled down on defense in the opening part of the second half, holding Loyola to four points in the opening eight minutes of the half. The Griffs would build a 49-39 lead during that span, taking the 10-point lead on a 3-pointer from Cavo.

Loyola chipped away at the lead, getting as close as four on two separate occasions. A three-point play from Siobhan Prior made it 55-51 at 6:20.

The Griffs would never let the Greyhounds get any closer, despite going 2-for-9 from the free-throw line during the final five minutes. Canisius overcame those free-throw struggles by getting three offensive rebounds during those final five minutes.

Prior led Loyola (8-11, 3-6 MAAC) with 22 points while Kaitlin Grant had 11 points and nine rebounds and Meredith Tolley had 10 points.

Canisius returns to the Koessler Athletic Center for two home games next weekend. The Golden Griffins will host Saint Peter's on Friday, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
