Miranto Earns Academic All-America Honors

Canisius senior Katie Miranto (pictured) has been named to the 2008 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America third team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today. She is the sixth Golden Griffin softball player to be named Academic All-American and the first since 2001.

Miranto finished her career at Canisius by hitting .405 with 70 hits and a school-record 54 runs scored during the 2008 campaign. The school's all-time leader in hits and runs scored, she drove in 40 runs and ranked in the top-10 nationally in triples with eight in her senior season. A two-time team captain, Miranto leaves Canisius ranked in the top-10 in school history in 10 different offensive categories and closed out the year as the MAAC's Co-Player of the Year, the MAAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player and the Canisius College/Federated Insurance Female Athlete of the Year. A two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Region first-team award winner, Miranto was also a three-time MAAC All-Academic selection and was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District I first team after her junior and senior seasons.

The 2008 softball team went 39-14 overall and secured the program's 12th MAAC regular-season title, the 11th MAAC Tournament crown and 10th NCAA Division I Softball appearance. The Griffs' 39 wins set a new school record and the team's 3-2 win over Long Island at the Hempstead Regional was the program's fifth NCAA Tournament victory and the first since 2000, making Canisius the only MAAC softball program to win at game in the national tournament.
